The first inhabitants of the area that would become Salem, Indiana were the Delaware Indians. The City of Salem was founded in 1814 by early settlers that were attracted to the abundance of rolling terrain, raw materials, wildlife and a confluence of two streams (now known as Brock Creek and Blue River). The City of Salem was founded two years before Indiana was established as our 19th state.
